Rosy: Sam has gone through a major evolution since we first met him in season 1, can you talk a bit about the character’s evolution, and where you see him going?
S. Trammell: Well yeah, I guess the first three seasons that took up about two months time and in that time he had sex with a few different people. He has one girlfriend that totally betrayed him to Maryann. He almost got killed by Maryann, and then the whole stuff with his parents an all that. We don’t know yet if I shot my brother or what happened there. But yeah, Sam has kind of had a tough road for sure, but we saw in the flashback that she had a tough life before Bon Temps. So, I think Sam came to Bon Temps to reinvent himself and to start a new life, and I feel like Sam is a really good person at heart.
But a lot of the repressed emotions built up. It’s frustrating that we didn’t know a lot about me because I kept sam-merlotte to myself. I was kind of secretive and, I think that throughout the two months that were the first three seasons, I was coming out of my shell a lot more, and not repressing a lot of the baggage that I had coming into Bon Temps.
In a way, I’m becoming more myself, I’m kind of hiding myself a little bit less. Also, people have found out that I’m a shape shifter and it’s kind of hard. I think that would be one of the main things that sam has been shaken loose from his shell and and we are starting to see really more who he really is, the good sides and the bad sides. Sam is definitely a good person and he follows that up in the fourth season. He is not as hidden as he was.

While visiting a Halloween store in L.A. on Oct. 24, the True Blood actor (who plays a shape-shifter on the show!) tried on a wolf suit.
The actors made Amazing central‘s list of Hollywood’s 25 best Halloween Costumes.

MG: What can you let us know about Season Four plans?
ST: Honestly, I do not know what is going to happen. I know we are going to follow the book to a certain degree like we have done. I know their are going to be some witches involved in the stories. The writers are figuring it out themselves right now. They are pitching stories and writing the first couple of scripts. Last year was a really big year for us because a lot more people started watching it.

Of all the shows out there, what’s it like to be on one with so many possibilities?
Sam Trammell:
It’s so fun! I always say that it’s a genre show, but what we really are is a character drama in a fantastical world. So we have this really good character writing and character development from Alan Ball but we’re in this insane world where you get to do all this fun stuff — like turning into animals, and there’s lots of blood, and it’s a really fun show to do. We’re just so lucky because it never gets boring; it always gets more and more challenging.
Good fantasy is really about the characters.
Yes. That’s really where you have to go. I was talking to Alan Ball about it at the beginning of the season and he said, “In each season you have to go deeper into the characters.” And for sure, that’s what they’ve done this year. I think even more than last year, every character has a serious journey where everybody changes. We have 24 episodes under our belt now and we’re all just hitting our stride.
