Nelsan talks Lafayette
Nelsan Ellis talked with Digital Spy about his character Lafayette.
This is what he had to say:
Speaking to Digital Spy, Ellis explained that he is pleased Lafayette’s mother Ruby Jean (Alfre Woodard) has now appeared on the show.
“It establishes him as a person with roots in this town,” he said. “Outside of just being the person who takes care of his cousin Tara.
“He never really has scenes with his auntie, Tara’s mom, so to give him a mother sort of establishes that this dude… it gives him a history.”
Ellis also promised that the upcoming third season finale is shocking but refused to reveal too many details.
“There’ll be some big twists,” he said. “There’ll be some big unexpected twists. But I like my job so I can’t give them away!”
Lafayette is my favorite character!!
Can’t wait to see what he is getting into!!!
Nelsan Ellis Interview with Access Hollywood
Allan and Nelsan talk Lafayette
The Charlotte Observer has an article talking with Allan Ball and Nelsan Ellis about the character Lafayette.
Check it all out here.
Here is an excerpt:
Amid “True Blood’s” menagerie of vampires, shape-shifters and werewolves, Lafayette’s bayou bohemian was the hardest role to cast, according to creator Allan Ball, who adapted the show from Charlaine Harris’ Sookie Stackhouse novels.
“Whenever you have a character in which one of his defining qualities is his sexuality, it’s always challenging,” says Ball via e-mail, “because you don’t want to bring in someone who’s going to play that in a phony way.”
That Ellis has fashioned Lafayette into one of the most incandescent homosexuals in the annals of television is all the more impressive when you learn that the actor is straight. A former Marine, no less.
Nelsan Ellis Interview

Vibe has an Interview with Nelsan Ellis.
Check it all out here.
Here is an excerpt:
What do you find most intriguing about the character?
That people like that character [laughs]. There’s something about the dude that’s likeable. Even I was watching myself and criticizing myself—I go, “I like that dude.” The most intriguing thing about him is his strength and his stillness. If you watch Lafayette he doesn’t do very much. He’s not quick on his toes unless he gets heated. He’s just in that southern way—sort of sauntering along, being who he is which is something I never intended. It just happened.

Nelsan Interview

Digital Spy has an interview with Nelsan Ellis. I LOVE Lafayette, can’t wait to the new season starts.
Read the interview here.
Here is an excerpt:
Is there any chance of a love interest for Lafayette?
“Yes, there’s talk. I don’t want a love interest though, because I think Lafayette doesn’t have time! He has his businesses to deal with. Plus, it would take a special creature to pin him down.”
What about Eric? He’s been having sexual dreams about him and that would be a hot story!
“Hahahah! I would love for Eric and Lafayette to get their thing on!”
How do you feel about filming sex scenes?
“I haven’t had to film a sex scene yet. It would make me terribly uncomfortable. I’d have to do it, though, because I’m bound by contract.”
Is there any chance of Eric or another vampire turning Lafayette?
“Yeah, anything can happen on True Blood. I mean, Lafayette could become a werewolf. Him being a vampire might be a bit on the nose, so I’m thinking they might turn him into something else.”

Nelsan Interview

The Chicago Tribune has an interview with Nelsan Ellis. He talks about the show and his character.
Read the entire article and interview here.
Here is an excerpt from the interview:
Ellis couldn’t be less like Lafayette; the actor is humble and seems flummoxed when his status as a fan favorite is brought up.
“I don’t understand that, maybe because I’m so critical” of his performance, said Ellis, who watches each episode 20 times in order to critique his acting. But the attention is “very flattering,” he adds.
So what’s next for Lafayette? Ellis says he doesn’t usually talk to the show’s writers about what’s coming for his character, though he will mention to executive producer Alan Ball one idea he has for Season 3, which begins production in December. He wants Lafayette to get some flashback scenes with his mother.
“There are so many lines about how his mother treated [Lafayette],” Ellis said. “It would be nice if we found out in the flashbacks that she was a vampire.”
