This beauty is a blondie, so she sported a wig for the first three seasons of True Blood! But she finally decided to take the plunge and dye her locks for Season 4, an experience she said was liberating. “It’s fun being a redhead,” Carrie told us in our exclusive interview.

The show uses two real panthers for the work. “They’re great, but you can’t really touch them,” Pulsipher said. “The trainers have really strict rules about what you can and can’t do. They’re just so majestic and so silently powerful.”

From Carrie:

“I can’t say anything other than it’s bigger and crazier than ever,” she teased, adding, “You know, we went pretty far even in the pilot, but somehow they go farther and farther and keep it going.”

Gianna: At the end of last season, Arlene was faced with a very difficult decision about having a serial killer’s baby…

Carrie: Yes, she made a very, very difficult decision not to bring a baby into the world that had an evil father. So she had to reconcile her feelings about abortion, because Arlene is very anti-abortion and certainly her background and the people around her are pretty conservative. That’s not something you choose to do. If you get pregnant, you have the child. But Arlene is also very superstitious and believes in things like good and evil. And the only way she could deal with the fact that Rene killed all these people – and she didn’t even know he was that kind of a person – was that he was evil. He was a wolf in sheep’s clothing. She thought he was the best guy ever, but underneath, he was a really rotten person. Arlene had to deal with the fact that bringing this child into the world wouldn’t be fair to the world. She had to find an alternative way to let go of this child, and that was presented in the form of Holly. They bonded on a fundamental level and Arlene trusted her immediately. So they went into the woods and did this ritual, and she had a conversation with Mother Nature, with her own mother and with God, and she said, I’m doing this because it’s right. And Holly said, If it doesn’t work, you have to let it be. So when she woke up in a pool of blood, she thought, OK, it worked. And then she hears from the doctor that the baby is on board… So that’s where things were left off for Arlene: The baby is on board.

PW: What was your reaction when Alan Ball told you the plan for your character this year?
Carrie: I got really excited about it because when they give you a storyline — some kind of conflict or obstacle — you know the writers have something to work with. I also was looking forward to seeing how her relationship with Terry is going to progress.

PW: Yes, but I’m nervous because this Sunday she tells Terry that he’s not the father of her baby.
Carrie: I know! I know! The good news is that Terry is such a sweet character, I hope the audience is pleased with what happens. But it does go to a surprising place – very unexpected. Arlene starts walking down an avenue that I don’t think the audience would expect her to.

Adam: True Blood has one of the most dedicated fan-base on TV today, especially for a Cable show. How does it feel to be in the centre of all of it?

Carrie: I did 7 pilots over the years before I did the True Blood pilot. You never know which of these pilots is going to hit, and you certainly can’t predict how successful it will be. So I don’t take any of this for granted at all. I honestly never imagined the show that would hit for me would be what I like to call a “drama-comedy-horror-vampire-porn-variety-show”. Nor did I think I’d be playing a buxom, red-headed, sassy, brassy, married a million times waitress with an attitude. But I’m thrilled to be doing it!
