Disappointing final books aside, Sookie Stackhouse’s journey from faith-abiding telepathic barmaid to fangbanger to fairy, in a society that acknowledged the existence of vampires, was gripping. There were barely five minutes when there wasn’t someone looking to kill her, but Sookie proved she could protect herself time and time again (and make peace with God later). We’ve lost count of the bodies buried in her backyard, making for fast-paced and entertaining reading.

USA Today talks with Charlaine Harris about the end of of the Sookie Stackhouse book series. The last book will be released on May 7, 2013 and is available for pre-order at Amazon. The book is called Dead Ever After.

Q: The Sookie series has so many fans. Why end it now?

A: I’ve just come to the end of that particular road. I didn’t have a complete story arc in mind, but probably by the second book, I had an idea where I wanted the books to end. I began to feel the creativity of the series was wearing thin and I hate to keep on writing characters when I’ve lost my love for them. So it seemed time to end the series while I was still happy with what I was doing.

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: How does it feel to be done with the Sookie Stackhouse novels?

CHARLAINE HARRIS: Mostly I’m just excited about doing something different. This is the longest I’ve ever written a series and I’m really ready to do something else. I’ve sure enjoyed living in Bon Temps and seeing Sookie so much, but I just came to realize that I’d come to the end of what I’d wanted to say about her.
